A one-stop shop for accommodation

There is no other place like Dampier in Australia! A place where the might of Australia’s Oil and Gas, Iron Ore, Salt and Gold mining come together and co-exist with spectacular tourist sights and experiences. The Mermaid is your one-stop shop for comfortable accommodation, breakfast lunch and ala carte dinner service, with regular well-priced meal specials. In our Sirens restaurant or sports bar with pub tab, or our huge beer garden overlooking Hampton harbour. The Mermaid is the only accommodation with views of the breathtaking Hampton harbour and the sun setting over the water behind East Intercourse Island. It is the gateway to the 42 Island Dampier Archipelago, a hidden gem in the Pilbara. Forget Broome and the Bustling tourist scene, the Pilbara experience is a more peaceful, surprising, self-exploration experience.

We cater for everyone from the business traveller, families, tourists and mining workforce and everyone in between. The Mermaid was opened in 1967 and is now an Icon of the Pilbara. Built by Hamersley Iron (now Rio Tinto) To service the townsite of Dampier and its fluctuating mining workforce. It was the favourite spot for a famous Kelpie/cross known as Red Dog. Further amenities the hotel offers are guest laundry facilities, room service, smart tv’s, Wi-Fi, pool tables, dart room, William Dampier function room, breakfast room, swimming pool, barbeque area, free airport transfers, wheelchair access.

Through the mining Boom’s and Bust’s, cyclone’s and renovation’s the Mermaid has retained its rich character and that frontier feel. We pride ourselves on offering fantastic food in an inviting atmousferNurtured by our warm and friendly staff to make every stay as comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable as possible. We love helping you decide what to see next in our region, specifically Dampier, the Burrup Peninsula and the Archipelago.

The Pilbara is one of the oldest landscapes on earth. Scientists estimate the Burrup peninsula contains approximately 1 million petroglyphs or Indigenous rock art dating back tens of thousands of years, making it the highest density site for indigenous rock art anywhere in Australia. Because of this it has a National Heritage listing and was put forward for World Heritage listing in 2020.

There are self-guided trails to some of this rock art on the Burrup but the best way to fully understand their meanings and significance is through one of the guided tours of the Murajuga national park. The Burrup also has a very popular beach called Hearsons cove which has various shaded seating areas, barbeque and ablution facilities. Hearson is the best vantage point to watch the staircase to the moon. There is boat access, beaches and fishing at Withnell bay and The very interesting Woodside Gas plant Museum.

Dampier is a perfect base to do day trips to millstream national park, Cossack abandoned pealing town, Point Sampson for lunch at the Tavern and a swim at honeymoon cove, Karratha red earth arts precinct and Karratha leisure plex (great for kids), the Harding dam catchment, Roebourne art group and Ganalili centre, Miaree pool on the Maitland River, and too many more to list.

Dampier’s archipelago of 42 islands of beaches, reefs and bays are a leisure boat tourists paradise for fishing, swimming, diving, snorkelling, crabbing, squiding, Whale watching (July to September), Turtle nesting and hatching (November to the end of March). For the serious adventurer, we are also the gateway to the world-renowned Montebello islands group. 4 or 5-night liveaboard charters operate out of Dampier from June to September. Reef seeker charters offer day cruises, sunset cruises snorkelling and bay hopping.  Island day cruises depart twice a week aboard the huge super comfortable leisure cat Archipelago Adventure. Dampier has a number of breakfast, coffee, lunch and dinner eateries along with a picturesque foreshore with extensive kids play equipment shaded seating. New foreshore amenities were designed with families and kids in mind, barbeques and grassed areas, toilets and freshwater washdowns etc..
